Esther Levigne
Esther Levigne (Barcelona, 1973) studeerde af aan de Academie Beeldende Kunsten te Maastricht. Zij exposeert sinds 2001 regelmatig bij Art Singel 100.
Esther Levigne, (Barcelona, 1973) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht. She exhibits regularly at Art Singel 100 since 2001.
In her art, Levigne makes us a witness of her obsession for the female body, religious traditions, violence and eroticism, all this in contrast to the innocence of her childhood. The collection, at first sight, composed by unrelated images, has something disturbing, because they touch upon the most intimate and hidden aspects of human desires.
Levigne realises her work in mixed techniques, adding devotional pictures, handwriting, embroidery, etc. to her paintings done in oil. Transparent layers partially conceal and are used as a binding element. Each layer contributes and leaves a trace of the story she wants to tell. She composes true fairytales in colours that are dreamlike, sweet and aggressive at the same time.
In haar kunst laat zij ons kennis maken met haar obsessies voor het vrouwelijke lichaam, religieuze tradities, geweld en erotiek, dit alles in contrast met de onschuld van haar kindertijd. De verzameling van, op het eerste gezicht, los van elkaar staande beelden, hebben iets verontrustends, omdat ze raken aan de meest intieme en verborgen menselijke verlangens.Levigne doet dit in een geheel eigen barokke techniek van schilderen, waarin zij bidprentjes, handschrift, knipsels, borduursels e.d. verwerkt, met overliggende, enigszinds verhullende, kleur en transparante laklagen. Elke laag draagt bij, en laat een spoor achter van de realiteiten die zij verhaalt. Zij componeert ware sprookjes in een koloriet dat zich manifesteert als tegelijk liefelijk en agressief.
